The Rotary Club of Bedford hosted another successful Bike Helmet Giveaway on Saturday, May 9, behind the Bedford Police Station, helping local children prepare for a safe biking season despite the rain and chilly weather.
Approximately 30 children were fitted with and received free new bicycle helmets during the semi-annual event. Volunteers ensured that each helmet fit properly so children would be protected while riding throughout the community.
On Tuesday, May 12, the Rotary Club of Bedford welcomed ten prospective members to an open house evening at the Library Meeting Room — and the enthusiasm in the room made it clear that the spirit of service is alive and well in our community.
We had planned a structured program for the evening, but the energy of the crowd had other ideas. Guests naturally gravitated through our five project showcase stations, spending time with Rotarians learning about our local work through Bedford Roots, our international reach through Global projects and Hope for the Hungry, our Youth programs including RYLA and scholarships, and the Bedford Rotary Foundation. Rather than formal presentations, the evening became a series of rich, genuine conversations between guests and members — exactly the kind of connection that Rotary is built on.
At a celebratory lunch meeting on May 5, the Rotary Club of Bedford was proud to honor Past District Governor Ralph Hammond with two of the highest distinctions Rotary International bestows — capping more than four decades of extraordinary service to our community and the world.
The occasion brought together not only Ralph's fellow club members, but a gathering of distinguished regional leaders: District Governor Johnny Ahern, who delivered the award presentation; District Governor Elect Penny Hamel; and Past District Governor Joyce Graff. Their presence was a testament to the deep respect Ralph has earned across the Rotary community.
Our community dinner on Wednesday, April 22nd, was our best attended yet! We had over 60 people who were served salad, a ham and pea hot pasta dish, and lemon meringue pie. We actually ran out of food as the last stragglers wandered in, which we will correct in our next dinner. Our volunteers were wonderful, including our "regulars" and new faces from the First Baptist Church. This community gathering, encompassing old and young, families and friends, is a testament to Rotary's ongoing commitment to serve the people of Bedford.
On the evening of Tuesday, May 12, the Rotary Club of Bedford is doing something it hasn't done in a while — throwing open the doors and inviting the whole community in. Whether you've always been curious about Rotary, know a neighbor who should be here, or are a member with someone in mind, this Open House is your opportunity.
In just one hour, guests will get a real look at who we are, what we've built, and why a room full of busy Bedford residents gives their Tuesday evenings to this club. Light refreshments will be provided. There's no cost, no commitment, and no sales pitch — just honest conversation and a chance to see the work up close.

The old VFW building has been torn down under budget, and the town will apply loam and grass seed to the site to stabilize everything until the construction phase takes place for the new park.
A civil engineer was hired and completed the site survey and topo drawings, which we needed for the design phase.
At our recent meeting last week, our committee voted to hire a design firm for the actual park design. The first phase will be to define the scope of the project design work. This will be followed by developing a couple of design schematic drawings of the proposed park. When this is completed, we will hold a public meeting and invite members of the public to view these schematics and solicit input before a final design schematic is approved by our committee to present to the Select Board for final approval.
